GAGOSIAN PRESENTS FATES BY RACHEL FEINSTEIN

Two eight-foot caryatids anchor Feinstein’s Greek debut,

women cast as architecture itself, holding up the roof the way

caryatids have for millennia, a Hellenic form later reworked by

Rome, the Renaissance, Neoclassicism, and closer to now by

Rodin’s fallen, exhausted versions. For Feinstein the caryatid

stands for something specific: the weight women carry in

holding up the social order itself, turned here into literal stone.

Duality runs through the show: mirror paintings built around

ancient memorial steles reflect the present back through the

past, life and death held in the same frame.

Copper and terra-cotta amphorae, ancient vase myths turned to

sculpture, sky against earth, sex and fashion pulled straight into

the present.
