DESTE FOUNDATION PRESENTS UNTIL THAT DAY BY NARI WARD SLAUGHTERHOUSE, HYDRA
For this year’s exhibition at the Deste’s Slaughterhouse on Hydra, Nari Ward brings his distinctive practice into dialogue with a site shaped by layers of history, labor, and transformation. Known for creating powerful installations from discarded and everyday materials, Ward uncovers the stories embedded within objects, revealing how memory, migration, and identity accumulate across time. In Until That Day, the artist extends this approach beyond the physical realm, weaving together sound, performance, and collective histories to explore the presence of Afro-Greek communities within the social fabric of contemporary Greece. The exhibition creates a compelling exchange between Ward’s interest in overlooked narratives and the Slaughterhouse itself, where the layered histories of the site become an active component of the work rather than a mere backdrop. Through this encounter, the work considers how histories persist within spaces, how voices echo across generations, and how acts of recognition can reshape our understanding of both place and belonging.
