CAN GALLERY PRESENTS GASWORKS 1982-1984 BY NIKOS MARKOU

4.04.2026 - 9.05.2026

Gasworks, 1982–1984 revisits a vanishing industrial world through the lens of Nikos
Markou, whose photographs document the Gazi factory at the brink of its closure. Moving
between stark black-and-white images and a striking shift to color in the workers’ baths,
Markou captures not only the physical intensity of labor but also the quiet humanity of
those who endured it.
His careful use of light and shadow, developed during this period, transforms smoke,
dust, and coal into a textured visual language, while his growing intimacy with the
workers allows rare access to spaces and moments that feel both raw and unguarded,
ultimately redefining the boundary between observation and participation.
