BENAKI & GSA / Historical Archive Museum of Hydra Presents THE OUTWARD GAZE: THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF JOAN LEIGH FERMOR
The Outward Gaze celebrates the photographic legacy of Joan Leigh Fermor (1912–2003), whose
camera captured the people, landscapes, and fleeting moments she encountered across Greece
and the Mediterranean with remarkable sensitivity and grace.
Neither a professional photographer nor a documentarian in the conventional sense, Fermor
approached the medium as a way of engaging with the world, creating images that balance
intimacy with formal elegance.
Installed within the museum’s sea-facing historic setting, the exhibition resonates with the spirit of
movement and discovery that runs through her work, as the horizon beyond becomes a reminder
of the journeys, encounters, and ways of seeing that shaped her remarkable archive.
