Baloji: Echoes of History, Shadows of Progress
Baloji’s latest solo show is a rich, sensory journey—equal parts poetic and political. A carpet-like pathway winds through the space, a kind of aesthetic directive that sharply, yet almost playfully, channel us forward. But don’t be fooled: behind the lush textures and hypnotic visuals is a searing critique of colonial blindness and cultural erasure.
For over twenty years, Baloji has delved into the layered histories of the Democratic Republic of Congo—specifically the Katanga region—exploring the scars left by Belgian colonization and the ongoing exploitation of land and people. This exhibition majestically gathers over a decade of his work, from video and photography to golden installation, including a striking new commission.
Baloji doesn’t just revisit history—he reframes it. This is a show that hums with memory, but also with warning. The shadows of “progress” still stretch long, and he urges us to look closer. Much closer.
