ZOUMBOULAKIS PRESENTS DREAMING WAS NOT ENOUGH BY DOUGLAS KNESSE

Douglas Knesse’s first Greek solo lands at Zoumboulakis fresh off a residency in Psyrri, still
chasing his long-running subject: paradise.
Palm trees carry the weight here, pulled from Rio’s skyline and stripped of their postcard stillness
and calm. In Athens the palm found an unlikely cousin in the prickly pear, and that small discovery
opened a new body of work:
Watercolor sunsets and sunrises, ancient Greek vases painted back into use, Rio and Athens
folded into the same imagined refuge. Utopia means no place, and Knesse keeps circling that gap
between the paradise you paint and the one you might already be standing in.
