The Breeder, Athens Presents: The Gravity of Desire by Alexandra Christou

Alexandra Christou’s exhibition at The Breeder explodes with raw energy across two levels.

The ground floor is a glorious, over-expressive colorful mess of movement and dynamism, vibrant portraits from the late 80s and 90s capturing streetwise women in central Athens, lounging outside hotels, cigarettes dangling from defiant lips, gazes sharp and gossipy as they claim the urban night.

Downstairs, her massive brute canvases, echoing Egon Schiele’s fierce intensity, dominate with unflinching erotic scenes, urgent lovers pressing into each other on raw linen, bodies heavy with desire, flushed skin and grasping hands rendered in bold candor. A great artist, Christou spotlights overlooked women with unflinching honesty and power.
