MUSEUM BENAKI / PIREOS 138 PRESENTS: A LINE LIKE A WAVE By ALEXIS AKRITHAKIS CURATED BY CHLOE AKRITHAKI & ALEXIOS PAPAZACHARIAS
Explosive and luminously bright, this exhibition celebrates Alexis Akrithakis, a giant of Greek art
history whose work radiates not only in color but in fearless self-expression. Curated with
beautiful precision and clarity by his daughter, Chloe Akrithaki, who spent nearly five years tracing
and gathering the works from private collections around the world, A Line Like a Wave takes its
evocative title from something she once said to her father at the age of four, describing what she
saw within his art, an origin that already brings tears to the eyes. From his childhood certainty,
“I’ve been hooked on painting ever since I was a boy… I used to make up stories with pictures,”
to the restless years between Athens, Paris, and Berlin, his journey forms a continuous, charged
line, at times gentle, at times wild. As he wrote in 1971, his motifs become “conductors of human
communication,” tracing “the topography of life under an oppressive system” while remaining,
always, a coded signal of hope.
